Two days ago, I received an email from the ministry I’ll be traveling to Haiti with in November (Brent Gambrell Ministries). Seeing that I had email from them initially made me excited… and then very very stressed.
I was excited for news about the trip… Haiti has been on my heart since the earthquake, and I have tried more than once to get there. Now it’s finally happening and any little tidbit about Haiti makes my heart leap!
As I read the email, however, I began to get very stressed. They were recapping the process of this mission trip, and stated that by this time, we should all have already bought our plane tickets. When I called for prices a few weeks ago, the tickets were $923.
I had a mini-panic.
I only recently sent out my thank you letters to my wonderful sponsors of my Honduras mission in July… and have barely started fundraising for Haiti by selling bracelets! The money just isn’t there, I thought. How am I going to do this?
I then caught myself in my self-centered thinking. It’s not about me. I can’t do this. But God CAN.
He provided for my mission to Honduras in a huge way and He will continue to provide!
That night, I went to Bible study with the amazing group of girls from Hillvue who were a huge reason why I moved back to Bowling Green. As we were wrapping things up, those of us with prayer requests shared. I told the girls about the email I had just received, and how I was beginning to stress. I shared that money is very tight for me right now and with bracelet sales, I hadn’t raised even close to enough to afford the plane ticket, let alone the additional $650 I have to pay in less than a month for the remainder of the trip cost. I told them that I was certain God would provide… I have seen this over and over and over in my life, especially during the past few months as I have asked for His provision. I also shared that I know I am called to serve in Haiti and this isn’t an “if” or “maybe” kind of deal. I am called to go and I am going!!
They agreed to join me in prayer that God would provide.
Last night (the next day), I was at Hillvue. I had just finished up with the junior high service, and was heading into the sanctuary to get ready for choir practice. I ran in to a young couple that I don’t know… they asked my name… we introduced ourselves…
…and then they proceeded to tell me that they knew about my need and that God had laid it on their hearts to help provide for my mission. They had been saving money to go on a mission trip themselves, but are not going to be able to go now.
I initially thought that maybe they were going to buy some bracelets… or even make a small cash donation. At this point, I was thinking either would be awesome, especially coming from people I don’t know. I love how these people have been popping out of nowhere to help! Each one has been an answer to prayer!
But after an extremely unbelievable conversation… I walked away with my heart pounding and tears pouring…
…because they shared that they were going to pay for my ENTIRE.TRIP.
I don’t know what you’re say to someone in a moment like that (I am positive I didn’t speak any intelligible English to them)… and I honestly don’t know how to even share this with you. I’m doing the best I can.
I don’t want to, by any means, minimize the significance of this encounter.
It is a MIRACLE.
I will be flying to Haiti on November 12th!! 🙂
At this time, I have decided to continue the bracelet sales.
Each missionary going to Haiti is responsible for collecting supplies necessary to the ongoing ministries in Haiti. Therefore, one large suitcase I will be taking is designated specifically for the supplies I have to collect. These supplies will cost money that the bracelet sales will go to support.
But that isn’t the only reason I have decided to continue the bracelet sales…
The main reason is that God immediately made it clear to me that I have a responsibility now to not only GO, but to help OTHERS to go. So I am starting a savings for other people who respond to the call to make disciples of all nations…
…and I am so excited to one day step out in faith, the way that the couple who blessed me did, and be obedient to the Lord by doing whatever it takes to further His kingdom!
